Newfoundland 2024: Day 5

Port de Grave, Newfoundland

Whenever I waver about going out for sunrise at home, I remind myself that some of the best sunrises are mornings where I don’t have high expectations. Such was the case this morning when I saw a wall of clouds heading toward the horizon around 5AM. But I gamely threw on some clothes and headed to the top of Signal Hill, where I was treated to the sun lighting up that cloud deck and turning the sky a gorgeous pink. My pictures aren’t the greatest because there was too much contrast between the dark clouds and bright sun, but I’m glad I decided to go.

Newfoundland 2024: Day 4

Where can you see the first sunrise in North America, visit the largest Atlantic puffin colony in North America, and wander around quaint fishing villages? Newfoundland, of course! Today I took a drive along part of Newfoundland’s Irish Loop (named for the many Irish immigrants to Newfoundland) from St. John’s to Ferryland and back.

Newfoundland 2024: Day 1

Welcome to “The Rock”. Or Newfoundland, as it’s more commonly known. Newfoundland (technically, Newfoundland and Labrador) is Canada’s easternmost province, located some 900+ miles from Boston as the crow flies. My route today was a bit more circuitous, taking me first to Montreal, then on to St. John’s, where I’ll be spending the next 6 days exploring this rugged province.

South Dakota 2024: Day 6

I ate breakfast in the shadow of the presidents this morning. Any guess as to where? If you guessed Mount Rushmore, you’re correct! I hit the road early this morning so as to beat the crowds to the monument and it worked out in my favor. There were quite a few people there before 7AM but it wasn’t crowded. I got to enjoy the Presidential Trail with very little company and take in the views without hundreds of people in my photos.
